Health Care for People with Albinism in Morogoro Region
People with albinism (PWAs) face a number of unique health challenges, including skin cancer, vision problems, and hearing loss.
In Morogoro region, PWAs often have difficulty accessing the healthcare they need due to stigma, discrimination and insufficiency of health care provision for persons with albinism.
Skin cancer is the most common and serious health risk for PWAs. Their skin is highly sensitive to sunlight, and they are much more likely to develop skin cancer than people with normal pigmentation. PWAs should apply sunscreen lotion with an SPF of 30 or higher at all times, even on cloudy days. They should also avoid direct sunlight as much as possible.
Vision problems are also common among PWAs. Many PWAs have nystagmus, a condition that causes the eyes to move rapidly and uncontrollably. This can make it difficult to see and read. PWAs may also have low vision or be legally blind.
Hearing loss is another health problem for some PWAs. About 10% of PWAs have Waardenburg syndrome, which is a genetic disorder that can cause hearing loss. PWAs may also experience hearing loss due to skin cancer on the ear canal or due to otosclerosis, a condition that affects the bones in the middle ear.
